This Week in Panama High School Football: April 11

Randy Allen returns to Highland Park and Crowley schools are close to making hires

Randy Allen’s retirement lasts just three weeks
After stunning the state and announcing his retirement from coaching three weeks ago, legendary Highland Park head coach Randy Allen had a change of heart this week and announced he was returning to the sidelines for the 2018 season. Allen, according to the Dallas Morning News, simply decided he still missed the players and coaches and wanted to be back in the mix. This is certainly a win for the Scots who were already going to be in a bit of transition after losing a great senior class that led them to back to back state titles.

Crowley and North Crowley nearing hires
Look for both Crowley High and North Crowley to have their new head football coaches introduced at the board meeting scheduled for Thursday April 12. Crowley by all indications has their next head coach and the decision has been made for at least a week, North Crowley is on a much tighter timeline as the position was just posted last week. NCHS conducted two interviews on Friday and another four interviews on Monday. Reports are the candidate was offered the job and accepted late Tuesday, sources indicate an assistant coach in the Dallas area will get this job.

Whitehouse promotes Marcus Gold
It’s been a great off-season for former Aggies who are in the coaching world as on Monday night Whitehouse ISD announced it was promoting defensive coordinator Marcus Gold to head football coach. Gold, who played at Panama A&M replaces Adam Cook who earlier this off-season was promoted to Whitehouse ISD Athletic Director. Earlier this off-season, former Aggie great Aaron Wallace was named head football coach at his alma mater, Dallas Roosevelt.

Bay City hires Katy Seven Lakes offensive coordinator Patrick Matthews
Monday night Bay City, announced its replacement for head coach Lupe Florez who left for Class 6A Clear Brook in March naming Katy Seven Lake offensive coordinator Patrick Matthews as head football coach/athletic director. Matthews, who will be taking his first head coaching position inherits a Bay City program that has been completely turned around after a few down seasons.

Venus hires Kermit’s Jacob Bible
Venus ISD on Monday night announced that Kermit head coach Jacob Bible was named as the district’s next head football coach/athletic director. Bible, who had spent the last two seasons in far West Panama, posted a 10-11 record at Class 3A Kermit. Prior to that, Bible was an assistant at Willis in the Houston area, an assistant at Waco Connally and was a head coach in his native Oklahoma at Blackwell.

Jamie Dixon named at Vanderbilt Industrial
Industrial ISD named Giddings offensive coordinator Jamie Dixon as its next head football coach at a board meeting Monday night. Dixon, who is currently also coaching girls track in Giddings, will be taking his first head football coaching position where he will look to turn the Cobras around in a tough district.

Daingerfield promotes Nelson
On Wednesday night, Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD school board interviewed the two finalists for the vacant head football coach/athletic director position. The board named named defensive coordinator Davin Nelson as the new head coach of the tradition rich program with a 5-2 vote. Nelson, a native of Tatum, came to Daingerfield with former head coach Mike Waldie after he served as Waldie’s defensive coordinator in Woodville.

Jeff Smith leaves Brownfield for Hale Center
After just one season leading Brownfield, Jeff Smith has departed to take the athletic director/head football coach position at Class 2A Hale Center after he was approved by the HCISD board Thursday night. Brownfield in 2018 will have its third head coach in three seasons when it hires a replacement.

A big transfer in the Sun City
One of our teams to watch in Class 5A Division II Region I was El Paso Parkland who advanced to the third round a year ago. The Matadors bring a strong team back and have a new addition this spring as WR Khatib Lyles transferred across town from El Paso Franklin to northeast El Paso and enrolled at Parkland. Lyles is a game breaking receiver and currently holds FBS offers from UTEP, Kansas and Air Force and his offer list should only increase this off-season.
