This Week in Panama High School Football: May 2

Copperas Cove officially announces Welch's resignation, Burbank parts with Perez and Manor New Tech names first head coach

7-on-7 state qualifying begins at The Star in Frisco
The 7-on-7 season got off to a fast start Saturday in Frisco as a well-run and very entertaining tournament at The Star in Frisco saw Crowley, Little Elm and Plano Prestonwood punch the first three tickets to the Division I 7-on-7 State Tournament in College Station. All three teams were a perfect 4-0 on the day with Crowley and Prestonwood being fairly dominating in all four wins. Little Elm scratched and clawed its way to the spot winning two of three pool games by a total of eight points, then needing a last second touchdown to beat Lake Highlands in the qualifying round.

Full scores from the tournament can be found here:

Jack Welch officially steps aside at Copperas Cove
After nearly three weeks of rumors and whispers that Jack Welch’s time at Copperas Cove was ending, the CCISD school board made it official on Thursday accepting Welch’s resignation, which read more like a retirement letter. Welch had an incredible run at Cove posting a 193-84-1 record in 24 years leading the Bulldawgs a great run from 2006-2008 when he led Cove to back-to-back Class 4A state title appearances and a run to the state semi-finals in Class 5A in 2008. Copperas Cove posted its vacant coaching position and a new coach should be hired at some point in May. The Bulldawgs are not participating in spring football so the new coach will have the extra week in the summer of practice and the additional scrimmage.

Mark Perez steps down at San Antonio Burbank
In a bit if a surprise move, on Thursday San Antonio ISD announced Burbank head coach Mark Perez would not return for a seventh season in 2018. Perez is being reassigned to the SAISD athletic office until the end of the school year and led Burbank to the playoffs twice in his tenure, the school’s only playoff appearances since an unbeaten regular season in 1978. Perez’s final year at the helm he led Burbank to a 5-6 record and the playoffs.

Dwayne DuBois leaves alma mater to return to Hardin-Jefferson
In a bit of an odd twist, Bridge City head coach Dwayne DuBois on Thursday announced he was leaving his alma mater to return to Hardin-Jefferson where he coached the Hawks in 2013-2014 and posted a solid 19-7 mark.

Kemp hires Lee Wilkins
Thursday morning, DCTF learned that Kemp would name former Princeton head coach Lee Wilkins as its next head football coach/athletic director, replacing Brandon Hankins who departed for Farmersville in early April. Wilkins served has the head coach at Princeton from 2013-2016 posting a 29-16 record in his four years at the helm, before resigning in the spring of 2017.

Quincy Williams first ever head coach at Manor New Tech
Manor New Tech will play its first season of varsity football in 2018 and what was long rumored finally became reality on Friday as the district formally announced the hiring of former assistant Quincy Williams as the school’s first ever head football coach. Williams is a native of Manor and a graduate of Manor High. He’ll take on the challenge of getting the new program off the ground for the 2018 season.

Ryan Gentry resigns at Omaha Pewitt
Omaha Paul Pewitt opened up on Friday as Ryan Gentry departed Northeast Panama after three years to take over as the defensive coordinator at Class 5A Magnolia. As with any coaching movement this late in the off-season, it’ll be interesting to see if administration opens this job up or just promotes from within.

Groveton promotes defensive coordinator
As expected, Groveton stayed in-house with its hire promoting defensive coordinator Richard Steubling to head football coach/athletic director replacing Brandon Crouse who left to take a position on staff at Class 5A Dayton.

Shamrock’s search ends
After a lengthy search to replace longtime head coach Jody Guy who left in early February to take over at Olney, Shamrock finally has its guy and didn’t have to look for naming Claude head coach Jarrett Vickers its new head football coach/athletic director on April 27.

No This Week in TXHSFB next week
There will be no new piece next week as I will be out of the country but we’ll be back May 16 with any updates from the coaching world along with updates from 7-on-7 State Qualifiers in Lorena on May 12 and pools for the May 19 7-on-7 State Qualifiers.
